Yogi Bear (voiced by Dan Ackroyd) and his faithful, shorter bear-pal Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) live in beautiful Jellystone Park. Yogi is constantly trying to invent new ways to confiscate the pick-a-nic baskets of the park’s visitors, much to the eternal chagrin of Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanaugh). When the Ranger catches Yogi arranging a picnic table’s loose board to “catapault” a basket to his arms, he lets Yogi have a few choice words. Unexpectedly, a lovely lady interrupts. Her name is Rachel (Anna Faris) and, as a nature lover/film maker, she has traveled to the park especially to make a documentary on the reputed “talking bear”.
Liking the looks of Rachel very much and being rather shy around women, Smith consents to the plan, so he can get to know her better. But, now trouble arrives. The mayor (Andrew Daly) has spent so much of the town’s money on his own luxuries that the only way to balance the budget is to sell Jellystone park to a lumber company. Since the Ranger is NOT making a profit at the moment, he is given notice that the place will only exist for another week. Naturally, Rachel, Yogi, Boo Boo, and Smith are frantic about the impending doom.
Could they hold a big, splashy birthday party, complete with fireworks, and raise enough money to convince the mayor to abandon his plans? Then, too, Rachel makes a habitat discovery that might save the place, also. But, wait! Despite his good intentions, Yogi’s has a tendency to mess up the best laid plans. Will it happen again? This is a gorgeous looking film, brimming with color, that is also a good deal of fun. One need not have seen the old cartoons to appreciate it but those who have will like the results. The cast is quite fine, with Ackroyd doing a spot-on, comical voice for Yogi and Timberlake creating the same for the beloved Boo Boo. Cavanaugh and Faris make a great on screen couple while Daly and the others do nicely as well. As stated, the setting is a big draw while the costumes, script, and direction exhibit plenty of zestful merriment. Why not “share the Bear” with your loved ones soon? Everyone will be in good humor after a showing.
